In 1998 I bought a book called “A Course in Miracles“
The book was written by a lady named Helen Schucman in collaboration with William (‘Bill’) Thetford. She said that on October 21, 1965, an “inner voice” told her: “This is a Course in Miracles, please take notes.”
I can’t even remember when I first heard about A Course in Miracles and even why, I bought it. For many years I dipped in and out of the book and read a page here and there, opening the book to whichever page I was inspired to open. I have to admit I didn’t find the book easy to read and/or understand what I was reading, and it wasn’t something I “picked up” very regularly, so for months the book sat on my bookshelf unread. I always felt it was a “special” book and needed to be kept in my possession. To read as and when I felt inspired to.
Lesson 71:
“Where would you have me go?
What would you have me do?
What would you have me say?
And to whom?”
As the months and years went by I periodically took the book down from the shelf and “tried”, is the appropriate word, to get into reading and understanding. I instinctively knew it was certainly something I needed to read, so. I was annoyed with myself that I just couldn’t “get into” reading the book or even understand what it was saying to me.
Well, I persevered and I knew that I was “going about it” the wrong way. After many years of just dipping into the book, one day in 2016 I picked the book up and decided I was really going to “read it”. This had happened several times before but the intent never lasted, I got taken away to do other things. The ego is very clever!
Gradually as the months went by I became really interested in the words and even though I still didn’t understand half of what I was reading, I was certainly starting to enjoy and I was reading the lessons every day. I eventually started reading the Text also.
As the months and years go by. I am reading everyday and doing the lessons and text. I attend a monthly group where we join together to read the workbook and lessons, and this has been a tremendous help to me. In fact I believe this sharing with others has encouraged me to continue with my reading which has certainly opened my eyes to many things.
This book is an ongoing daily read for me and I continue doing the Forgiveness which will continue now and for evermore, I would guess.
A book that has helped me understand the writings is, “Living A Course in Miracles” by Jon Mundy. I took his book away on holiday with me, and it certainly gave me an insight into what the Course in Miracles was trying to say to me. Reading Jon’s book definitely got me into reading and understanding much more clearly.
You can also find Youtube videos from Ken Wapnick a leading figure in A Course in Miracles. Ken helped Helen Schucman in the editing of the course notes. He explains the course in a way we lay people can understand, well sometimes! I love his videos.

What exactly, then, is A Course in Miracles? The summary introduction, which appears in its Text, is quite succinct and brief. It reads:
“This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.”
This Course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:
“Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.”
A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is a self-study system of ‘spiritual psychology’ contained in a 1250-page, three-volume book.
The following UK website Miracle Network has all the information relating to purchasing the “Course in Miracles” book. The book has undergone editing and reprinting, so it is no longer a green book. I love my green copy though because I have written in it over the years and highlighted speciific text and lessons, but am tempted to buy the newer edition as it has good reference numbering which is useful.
The Miracle Network is a UK-Registered Charity, acting as a resource organisation for all things related to A Course in Miracles in the UK. They hold courses in London and other parts of the country.
This is an American site where you will also be able to purchase the book, A Course in Miracles. or alternatively if living in the UK you can purchase from the UK site Miracle Network.
